New Delhi: Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India seeking his immediate release.
Wangchuk has been in detention since the recent violence in Leh, where four civilians were killed in police firing during protests demanding Sixth Schedule status and statehood for Ladakh.
In her petition, Angmo has argued that the detention is unlawful and violates fundamental rights. She contends that Wangchuk, internationally known for his work on climate sustainability and education in the Himalayan region, has been “wrongly implicated” and “unjustly silenced” for advocating Ladakh’s constitutional safeguards.
Legal sources said the plea calls for urgent judicial intervention to secure his release and to ensure that his environmental and social activism is not criminalized.
The development comes amid growing pressure on the government following the September 24 killings. The Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance have both demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident and have refused to hold talks with the Centre until Wangchuk and other detainees are freed.
