Chandigarh: The ASMITA League was organised at the Sports Complex in Sector 46 here on Saturday to mark International Women’s Day, witnessing enthusiastic participation from girls and women across different age groups.
The event was organised by MY Bharat Chandigarh and the Sports Authority of India in collaboration with the Sports Department of the Chandigarh Administration.
Held under the ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) initiative, the programme aimed to promote women’s participation in sports and encourage fitness and active lifestyles among girls and women.
Athletics competitions including 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres races were conducted across three age categories — under 13 years, 13–18 years and above 18 years. In addition to the competitive events, fun activities such as lemon spoon race and three-legged race were also organised to encourage wider participation and create a festive sporting environment.
Participants ranging from five-year-old girls to women up to 60 years of age took part in the events, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the initiative and the growing interest among women and girls in sports and fitness.
The event was attended by Suman Sharma, Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh, Mahinder Singh, Joint Director Sports, Chandigarh Administration, and Vinay Kumar, District Youth Officer, MY Bharat Chandigarh, who encouraged the participants and appreciated the efforts being made to promote sports among women and girls.
Winners of the various events were awarded medals and certificates in recognition of their performance.
Officials said the ASMITA League served as a platform to celebrate women’s empowerment through sports while fostering a culture of fitness, confidence and community participation among women and girls in Chandigarh.
