Asks PM to immediately lodge protest with US President

New Delhi: The Congress has strongly condemned the brutal treatment meted out to an Indian student at the Newark airport in the United States. The party also played the video of the chilling ordeal of the student who was pinned down as if he was a hardened criminal.

The party asked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately lodge a strong protest with the US President Donald Trump and tell him that this is unacceptable. The party questioned the silence of the government of India on such a serious and sensitive matter.

Congress Spokesperson and the Chairperson of the Social Media and Digital Platforms Ms Supriya Shrinate said, this was not the first incident of humiliation and insult meted out to an Indian by the US authorities. She blamed Prime Minister Modi for failing to protect the honour and dignity of Indians in the US.

She said that the Prime Minister should immediately pick up the phone and call Trump telling him this is not acceptable. She said, if the PM does not do that, then what is he even the Prime Minister for, if he can’t even ensure safety and dignity of Indians?

She suggested that the weakness shown by the government of India towards the US President Trump’s repeated insults of India was one of the reasons for such audacity of the US authorities that a student was treated like a hardened criminal.

The Congress spokesperson said that if anyone is found to be at odds with the law there, he should be treated according to the law, but not be treated like hardened criminals in the most inhumane way. But, she noted, the people of Indian origin were being treated brutally in US, like animals.

Shrinate pointed out how the US deported 682 Indians in the most humiliating way, handcuffed in military planes. She said, people from countries like Nepal were deported in commercial flights, but the Indians were deported in military planes, handcuffed and under most inhuman conditions.

Suggesting it to be the result of India’s diplomatic failure, she said, Trump and the Trump administration were repeatedly insulting and humiliating Indians. Not only this, she added, Trump had hyphenated India and Pakistan and he had even said that he would continue to praise Pakistan whether anyone liked it or not, which was obviously meant for India.

Shrinate mentioned how Prime Minister Modi had hosted Trump in the midst of COVID in Gujarat and given the call for ‘Abki Baar, Trump Sarkar’ at the Howdy Modi rally in the US and Namaste Trump in India. Despite all this, she pointed out, the Indians were meted out with the most humiliating and inhuman treatment by the American administration and Modi was maintaining a conspicuous silence.
