Elections for 8 Rajya Sabha seats: will the equation of the upper house of Parliament change?

New Delhi: The Election Commission has announced the Rajya Sabha elections for 8 seats across two states. It has been communicated by the Commission that voting will take place on June 19 for 6 seats in Tamil Nadu and 2 seats in Assam. A notification will be issued on June 2.  

It is reported that the terms of two BJP MPs from Assam, Birendra Prasad Baishya and Mission Ranjan Das, are coming to an end. Additionally, the terms of Tamil Nadu’s DMK members Mohammad Abdullah, M. Samugam, and P. Wilson will also conclude in June. Furthermore, the terms of AIADMK’s N. Chandrasekaran, MDMK’s Vaiko, and PMK’s Ramadas will end on June 14. It has been noted that elections will be held for the seats of these eight individuals.

However, it is believed that there will not be a significant change in the composition of the Rajya Sabha following this election. If everything proceeds as expected, both the ruling and opposition parties will maintain their strength in these 8 Rajya Sabha seats even after the voting. Among the 6 seats in Tamil Nadu, four are likely to be secured by the DMK alliance. Meanwhile, the AIADMK alliance is expected to win 2 seats. Both seats in Assam are anticipated to go to the BJP camp.

Currently, the total number of seats in the Rajya Sabha is 245. At present, the number of MPs from NDA-affiliated parties stands at 125. Among these, the BJP has 98 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. The JD(U) led by Nitish Kumar has 4 MPs, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP has 3 MPs, and the TDP has 2 MPs. Additionally, there are 6 nominated MPs. The remaining 12 MPs belong to smaller parties that are part of the NDA.
