CHANDIGARH: A 30-year-old man Vijay Kumar Sheoran from Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district was brutally stabbed to death in a street attack in Worcester, United Kingdom. The aspiring scholar, who had sacrificed a stable government job to pursue higher education abroad, leaves behind a grieving family now pleading with India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for help in bringing his body home.

Vijay, a resident of Jagrambass village, had embarked on his academic journey just months ago, enrolling at the University of the West of England in Bristol. Two years prior, he made the bold decision to resign from his government position, driven by a passion for learning and a vision for a brighter future. Tragically, that dream was cut short in the early hours of November 25.

According to West Mercia Police, officers responded to reports of an assault around 4:15 a.m. on Barbourne Road, where they discovered Vijay suffering from severe stab wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the young student succumbed to his injuries later that day. Authorities have since arrested five men on suspicion of murder; they have been released on bail pending further investigation. A sixth individual, initially detained, was let go without charges. As the UK probe intensifies—with police issuing fresh appeals for witnesses—Vijay’s family grapples with unimaginable loss compounded by bureaucratic hurdles. His elder brother, Ravi Kumar, penned a desperate letter to the MEA, highlighting the family’s struggles with “complex foreign procedures, legal formalities, and financial aspects” involved in repatriation.

“We appeal to the government to help us so that his last rites can be held here,” Ravi told the media.

Adding to their plea, local MLA Sunil Sangwan has personally written to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, urging swift intervention to navigate the international red tape.

Vijay’s story resonates as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by Indian students abroad. The MEA has yet to respond publicly, but the family’s urgent call underscores the critical role of diplomatic support in such crises.
