Haryana’s first Nuclear medicine department to treat cancer patients in PGI Rohtak ready

Rohtak: Cancer patients will now get better treatment through nuclear therapy, for this the state’s first nuclear medicine department is ready, being started in Rohtak PGI. This is good news for cancer patients to get better treatment through nuclear therapy with nuclear medicines to start functioning soon. The equipment is awaited to treat all types of cancer and the institute has already sent a proposal for equipment to the Director Medical Education and Research (DMER).


Dr. SK Singhal, Director, PGI talking to media persons said cancer patients will soon be able to get better and precise treatment in PGI. For this, the Nuclear Medicine Department has been set up to for possible to test all types of cancer. This test will also be done with utmost precision, and will help in finding out the exact cancer affected area and its condition. This will help in giving medicines according to the extent of the disease. For this, SPECT CT, PET CT and Gamma Camera will be installed here. Dr Singhal said that three types of therapy will be available in the Nuclear Therapy Department. Cancer patients will get mainly three types of therapy in the Nuclear Medicine Department of PGI, which include first iodine thyroid cancer, second lutetium dotatate therapy and third lutetium PSMA therapy.

Dr Singhal explained all three therapies as First therapy: Thyroid cancer patients are treated under this therapy after surgery. In this, it is easy to treat the remaining disease by giving medicine through therapy. Second therapy: Neuro endocrine tumor can be cured through this therapy. In this, treatment is given through radioactive molecules. Third therapy: Prostate cancer in men is treated with this therapy. In this, three to four cycles are given to the patient.
Dr Singhal said five wards have been made in the department to keep the patients undergoing therapy. Only five patients will be kept in them. The reason for this is radioactive rays. After giving therapy, the patient will be kept till the effect of radioactive reduces as per the rules. The responsibility of the head of the Nuclear Medicine department has been given to Dr. Rohit. “Apart from starting a department for nuclear therapy at the highest place near Mata Vaishno Devi Dham, he also has the experience of running this department in Himachal. This will provide relief to the patients,” he said.

Dr. Rohit, Incharge, Department of Nuclear Medicine, PGI briefed, as per the rules, approval has been taken from the Atomic Energy Regulation Board (AERB) to start the Nuclear Medicine department. This building has been built under the instructions of the board. A special bunker has been made in it to keep radioactive material. Entry of anyone has been banned in it. Separate arrangements have been made for the patients. The patient will be discharged from here only when the effect of radioactive material from his body reduces. The patient’s stool will also be disposed of as per the rules of the board.
Dr Rohit said cancer patients are being given better treatment in the institute. Now advanced and precise treatment will also be available with new technology. The Nuclear Medicine Department has been created for this. Necessary equipment has been demanded for this. Treatment will be started as soon as the equipment arrives.
