Oh no, EVMs again! What’s new now?

Arvind Kejriwal’s allegation against the autonomous Constitutional body is not like another regular charge such as corruption which, unfortunately, being Indians we are accustomed to experience on daily basis. AAP’s charge, if proven, may completely curtail the faith of people in Indian democratic system

So, I am back again and with the same topic — EVMs.

I know, you must be asking why again EVMs Yashica, but kya karein, if Kejriwal is glued to it, how can I write on another topic. After all, he is the respectable Chief Minister of the capital of India.

Chalo, enough of CM’s buttering, let me ask you a question now:

saurabh-bhardwajLike me, do you also think that the live streaming of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj’s EVM tampering demonstration in Delhi Assembly on May 9 was a deliberate attempt to distract media focus from the corruption charges against Arvind Kejriwal?

The sacked Water Minister didn’t only level corruption charges against his own party chief but also reached ACB (Anti-Corruption Bureau) and urged for a lie detection test too.

“The CBI should do a lie detector test on all three of us. Right now, I am at the ACB to give details of tanker scam,” said sacked Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra while seeking lie detector test on Arvind Kejriwal and Satyendra Jain.

Whether AAP’s intention was to safeguard the public image of the CM or not, it succeeded in deviating public focus from Kapil Mishra, who already had enough of media attention while alleging corruption charges against Kejriwal.

Saurabh Bhardwaj’s attempt to show how electronic voting machine (EVM) can be tampered has raised enough of bubbles in already high tide political environment of the country. The EVM hacking is a serious concern and must be taken gravely by all political parties, law institutions and the Election Commission of India.

Arvind Kejriwal’s allegation against the autonomous Constitutional body is not like other regular charges such as corruption which unfortunately being Indians we are accustomed to experience on daily basis. AAP’s charge, if proven, may completely curtail the faith of people in Indian democratic system.

Though till now, the Election Commission has refused to accept the hacking charges and has continuously stated that tampering of EVMs is practically impossible.

“ECI unequivocally reiterate that given effective technical and administrative safeguards, EVMs are not temperable and integrity of the electoral process is preserved,” reads the press note issued by Election Commission of India on

March 16.

“The machine is electronically protected to prevent any tampering/manipulation. The programme (software) used in these machines is burnt into a One Time Programmable (OTP)/Masked chip so that it cannot be altered or tampered with. Further, these machines are not networked either by wire or by wireless to any other machine or system. Therefore, there is no possibility of its data corruption.”

“The software of EVMs is developed in-house by a selected group of Engineers in BEL (Defense Ministry PSU) and ECIL (Atomic Energy Ministry’s PSU) independently from each other. A select software development group of 2-3 engineers designs the source code and this work is not sub-contracted,” it added.

While AAP and the Election Commission of India are both ready to prove their own points, little do Indians know about these machines called- EVMs. Let’s dig into it a little bit.
