Punjab Farmers Conclude Protest, Submit Demands to Govt

Chandigarh—The three-day farmers’ protest in Punjab concluded on Tuesday as union leaders wrapped up discussions with Governor Banwari Lal Purohit, presenting a memorandum outlining their demands.

Earlier in the day, the farmer representatives engaged with state Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, deciding to schedule a meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on December 20.

Organised under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), the farmers presented a series of demands, encompassing issues such as establishing a minimum support price for all crops, implementing a law to guarantee crop purchases, and initiating a Kisan pension of Rs 10,000 monthly for farmers aged 60 and above. Additional demands included action against those involved in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, withdrawal of FIRs against farmers from the protests, annulment of FIRs related to stubble burning, elimination of the law mandating chip-based power meters, and reform in crop insurance policies.

During the meeting with Khuddian, farmer leaders expressed objections to CM Mann’s remarks on X (formerly Twitter), where he suggested that the people of Punjab might turn away from supporting farmers if protest activities persisted, causing inconvenience to the general public.
