Residents drinking ‘slow poison’ in water containing high fluoride content in 17 Haryana districts

Mahendergarh : Residents of 17 out of the total number of 22 districts in Haryana state are compelled to drink slow poisons in under ground water having high concentration of fluoride in drinking water, as per NGT  report. The information was also sought by the RTI activists and the report also revealed that in 230 districts of 25 states in the country the water contains very harmful arsenic contents in 230 districts across 25 states, and  are compelled to drink water containing poisonous concentration of fluoride contents in drinking water in 469 districts in 27 states, which is unfit for human consumption causeing several ailments.
According to information, the permissible limit of fluoride in water is 1 mg/litre, while the fluoride in these districts is 3.8 mg/litre, not only fluoride but TDS and chloride level is also much higher. On the basis of information from few adversely affected districts in the state include Jind  district apart from the Mahendergarh district having 17 villages with high concentration of fluoride. In Rewari district, there are 16 such villages.

According to a report by water management in the state , Gurugram has 9 such villages, Sirsa has 4, Kaithal 4, Panipat and Sonipat 1 village each.  In sPalwal, there are eight villages with a high fluoride level. Among other affected districts in Haryana state incude Ambala, Bhiwani, Faridabad, Fatehabad, Jhajjar, Karnal, Panipat, , Sonipat, Rohtak, Sirsa, Yamunanagar, Panchkula and Kaithal district where the quantity of Arsenic in ground water has been identified ranging between 0.01 to 0.05 mgm per liter water. Whereas the quantity of Fluoride has been observed as  around 1.5 mg each liter water.

A senior doctor at PGIMS Rohtak said the high concentration of fluoride could be one of the major reasons for oral health problems like dental fluorosis in the region where local population has to depend on groundwater. He said, other issues relating to fluoride could create problems related to arthritis and other serious issues in people, including children and women. According to health experts, Arsenic leaves very harmful effects on the health causing pain in the lower part of the body, severe stomach pain,  vomiting, diarhea, overwight, heart problems, ‘gathia’, blindness and even suffering from cancer.
