Russian actors to recite the Ram Leela in Ayodhya amid Deepotsav festival

Ayodhaya :  Around four decades later, the “Indo-Russian Friendship Association” Disha has resumed the grand spectacle of the Ramayana through their Ramleela performances, the story of lord Rama, commenced with Valimiki’s narrative and carry if forward, without halting at Tulsidas’s rendition.

 The story of Lord Rama, evolving from an ideal man to a divine being, remains an uninterrupted and enduring saga. Despite facing criticism, the retelling of Rama’s story continues to be a global phenomenon.

However, the long-standing land dispute in Ayodhya has finally found resolution, paving the way for the construction of a temple. The inspiration and challenges stemming from Lord Rama’s tale continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

In Ayodhya, Deepotsav has been an annual tradition for several years, drawing artists from over twenty countries to perform Ramleela.

In 2023, the India-Russia Friendship Association “Disha” is taking the initiative to organize Ramleela as part of the Deepotsav festival. They are extending invitations to artists from diverse countries who will take the stage to pay homage to Lord Rama and celebrate Indian mythological stories.

“Ramleela” stands as the most beloved presentation, drawing inspiration from the ancient text “Ramayana,” narrating the life story of Lord Rama. Disha Ramleela has a rich history dating back to 1960.

Gennady Mikhailovich Pechinkov, renowned as the “Russian Rama,” dedicated nearly two decades to staging Ramleela. His multiple visits to India and the honor of receiving prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, underscore his contributions.

Nearly forty years later, “Disha,” the Indo-Russian Friendship Association, has recommenced the tradition of Ramleela, a tribute to Padma Mr Gennady Pechinkov and a celebration of Indo-Russian friendship. The first presentation occurred in Ayodhya from November 4th to 6th, 2018, followed by a memorable staging during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj in January 2019.

The third installment took place during Deepotsav in Ayodhya in October 2022. Looking ahead to November 2023, “Disha” is all set to present Ramleela once again during Deepotsav, actively participating in the festivity that marks Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya.

Dr. Rameshwar Singh, the visionary behind “Disha,” expresses his heartfelt gratitude to prominent figures such as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, the Indian Ambassador to Russia, Pavan Kapoor, the Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, and Dr. Lavkush Dwivedi, the director of the Ayodhya Research Institute. He also extends his appreciation to Madhur Kankana Roy from the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre for their unwavering support in revitalizing Ramleela and fostering Indo-Russian friendship.
