Farmers remain united in their demands

New Delhi—Ahead of a key meeting with the Centre today, the farmers in no uncertain terms said all of them are united and this is not the struggle of farmers from a particular state. The farm leaders also asked the government not to indulge in a divisive agenda, adding that this would be the “last chance” for the government to call an emergency Parliamentary session to revoke the new farm laws. Peaceful sit-ins against the contentious agriculture laws, which entered the eighth day on Thursday, continue to intensify as more farmers join thousands of farmers camped at four entry points of Delhi including Singhu, Tikri, Ghazipur and Noida.

In a statement given by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha after an intensive meeting between leaders of 32 farmer unions, it said, “We ask the government not to create a wedge between us since we are united in our demands against the new farm laws. Tuesday’s meeting too sent out this message very clearly.” Tuesday’s meeting ended in a deadlock with the farmers rejecting the government’s offer to set up an expert panel to look into the issues raised by them. Senior leaders told FW that the proposal was unacceptable. “Has anything come out of a committee ever? The time to hold discussions is over. This should have been done before bringing the law. We are resolute in our demand of repealing the three laws,” a senior leader said.

Meanwhile, Home minister Amit Shah will meet Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh before the second round of talks that are to take place today. Capt Amarinder has reiterated time and again that the Centre should assure the farmers that MSP and mandi system will continue.

Thousands of farmers from across the country are holding peaceful sit-ins on the outskirts of the National Capital against the new farm laws which they fear will take away their assured earning from the MSP, leaving them at the mercy of corporates.
