Five railway officers suspended in iron scrap fraud, few others on CBI radar

Yamunanagar : Railway vigilance department detected a scam in disposing of huge stocks of actual quantity iron scrap at Jagadhri railway workshop in which the officers and the staff were supplying excessive quantity of iron scrap as compared to the actual quantity in the documents while weighing material at the ‘Dharamkanta’ installed inside the workshop and the practice was going on since a long time, when a vigilance team from railways headquarter New Delhi conducted a surprise raid and caught three trucks loaded with iron scrap outside the workshop and found that over 17 ton extra iron scrap was being supplied in these trucks as compared to the documents carried by the truck drivers. Later, during investigation it was observed that a chip was attached to the weighing machine. Vigilance team also recovered a remote from a truck driver.
When the matter was exposed, Chief General Manager Northern Railways Shobhan Choudhary took immediate action against the concerned officers and transferred as many as nine officers suspected involved in this conspiracy to Ludhiana, Amritsar, Badgaom and DRM office Ambala. Informationalso reveals that senior bureaucrats in the railway department were found saving the corrupt officers allegedly involved in the fraud, when the investigation of this case was handed over to the CBI. by senior railway authorities. Information also reveals that several others involved in this scam are also on the CBI radar and action against them is yet awaited.

Attempts were made to find out the names of suspended railway officers. When contacted Principal Chief Materials Manager Northern Railways, he confirmed that officers allegedly involved in this scam have been suspended but he failed to disclose the names of such officers. Even Deepak Kumar Chief PRO Northern Railways confirmed that action has been taken against some officers avoiding to disclose the names. DGM Northern railways too said that only CPRO can throw some light in this issue which is yet being investigated by the CBI and he was unaware of it.
