New Parliament building to be inaugurated on May 28th

21 opposition parties to Boycott the Event

New Delhi : The much awaited New Parliament Building is all set to be inaugurated now.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will do the honours of the new Sansad on May 28th, but opposition is boycotting the event as President Draupadi Murmu is not been invited to the ceremony. The opposition accuses the government and the PM Modi of ignoring and sidelining President Draupadi Murmu who is a constituent of the Parliament. Around 21 parties have decided to stay away from the ceremony while BJP and its allies will attend the function.  

The Government is leaving no stones unturned to make 28 May a memorable day, but the opposition parties have announced to boycott the ceremony. The opposition parties in a joint statement on Wedesday have said they find no meaning in the new building as the soul of democracy has been sucked out.  Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a tweet have said “ Parliament is not built by Bricks of ego, but through constitutional values”.

The opposition parties in a joint statement have said that “ undemocratic acts are not new to the Prime Minister. His decision of inaugurating the new parliament by himself and completely sidelining the President Draupadi Murmu is a grave insult and assault on our democracy. He has hollowed our Parliament. They accused the Prime Minister for suspending and disqualifying the members of the parliament who have raised their voice for the issues of the people. “ We will continue to fight in spirit, in letter and in substance against the government, they said.

 But on the other hand Government is blaming the opposition parties for making it an issue. Several Union Ministers have slammed the opposition for playing politics over the issue. It is the prerogative of the Lok sabha speaker to decide who will inaugurate the new building. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa calls opposition boycott a “drama” while  Union Affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri reminded how Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had inaugurated the Parliament Annexe building on October 24 th, 1975. And Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the Parliament Library On August 15, 1987. While there is a divide within opposition also, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal will attend the ceremony. According to SAD , “this is a moment of pride and we should not play politics over it”. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the new building is Prime Minister’s vision of creating a new India, which is a combination of India’s culture and traditions.
