Surge in Adenovirus cases in bengaluru , but docs say no cause of worry

Bengaluru : The bengaluru city is recording a surge in adenovirus cases, but as per experts stated there is no cause for concern as the infections are self-limiting.

Adenoviruses are a group of viruses that spread through aerosol (droplets), and contact. Most vulnerable are children aged below two. Most Patients especially kids recover within few days.

“Over three weeks, we have seen a huge uptick in andovirus cases. In the past two months, we have had 21 confirmed positive cases .In the OPD and ER,said doctors in one of the hospital here.

As per the National Institute of Virology, only 13 cases of adenovirus  infections have been reported in the city this year. The total count in Karnataka stands at 37. Health officials said reporting of adenovirus cases by private hospitals needs to improve.

Very few labs in the bengaluru city have testing facilities for the virus, As reported in West Bengal , the death toll has risen to 40 in nine days and worry is as the infections becomes widespread.

When contacted doctors about the precautions  they suggested,” Since adenovirus infections are high contagious, people are advised to follow strict hygiene and maintain socials distancing. Most symptoms last from the a few days to up to two weeks. Severe infections may last longer. Luckily , the symptoms do not require hospitalisation.  Patients  are advised to take medication only after consultation. People with flu symptoms should avoid public gatherings and wear masks.”
